Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American pianist, keyboardist, bandleader and composer.
As part of Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, Hancock helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the "post-bop" sound.
He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace music synthesizers and funk music (characterized by syncopated drum beats).
Hancock's music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs "cross over" and achieved success among pop audiences.
His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz.

The Headhunters are an American jazz-funk fusion band, best known for their albums they recorded as a backing band of jazz keyboard player Herbie Hancock during the 1970s. The Headhunters' music is a complex blend of many styles and genres, including jazz, funk, African and Afro-Caribbean music. The group is also notable for its pioneering use of electronic instruments and effects. In the sleeve notes to Head Hunters, Herbie Hancock confirms that track 3, "Sly," is named in tribute to Sly Stone, leader of Sly & the Family Stone. This band, along with James Brown are one of the key influences from funk music. As in funk music, the band often built a groove around a bassline; Paul Jackson's deceptively simple licks are frequently the bedrock of Headhunters material, as much as Mike Clark and Harvey Mason's iconic inimitable drumming ("Chameleon", the famous opening track of Head Hunters, provides a fine example of this, although in this case the main bassline is played by Hancock.) Also taken from funk music is the technique of building a complex groove by combining many small but carefully interlocking, syncopated contributions. While straightforward funk depends on a snappy, danceable backbeat from the drummer, Mike Clark and Paul Jackson's innovative interplay danced in and around the groove motif, creating some advanced and complex rhythmic patterns that put them on the map and in the history books. On this excellent follow-up to the legendary "Headhunters", Hancock lays into some seriously deep grooves on his Fender Rhodes, and is backed by many of the same musicians from "Headhunters", including bassist Paul Jackson and woodwind master Bennie Maupin. The opening track, "Palm Grease," is a slick future-funk workout that breaks down into highly percussive passages, while "Actual Proof" coasts along on Hancock's bright melodies, which are enhanced by Jackson's burbling bass lines and Maupin's deft, breezy alto-flute playing. Of the four lengthy pieces that make up "Thrust", "Butterfly" stands out as the disc's most reflective track, with Hancock taking his typically frenetic jazz fusion sound into surprisingly delicate and lyrical territory. While this outing will always be overshadowed by "Headhunters", it remains one of Hancock's finest releases and is essential for fans of '70s funk-laden jazz.

From there, any band member can swoop and dive in celebration of Hancock's vibrant compositions. Bennie Maupin brilliantly deploys several horns in spare, soulful, and otherworldly ways. But listen carefully, too, for the broad palette Hancock employs in lead and comping roles. He augments the streak of Bill Evans melodicism evident in earlier, acoustic years with sustained funk fire and shuddering R&B drive.
